The winters sound like my northern Quebec experiences.  Those big square states out in the middle get first crack at that cold Canadian air coming out of the Arctic.

I will bring my winter anti-exposure suit from the boat and a bunch of those instant warmers.  A two mile walk in it would cause a lot of chafing.  I just bought some DVD's from the Pentrex railroad catalog.  They did the Cass Steam DVD that I picked up at Cass in WV.
