On a fun note. Paul, I went to Cass Steam in WV and we derailed on the way up. Lead truck of the second car rode over the tight curve and pulled the last axle of the first car off with it. The two cars were left and everyone piled into the remaing three and we decended back to Cass. Got free tickets to try it again. Visited Blenko in Milton and bought some slab glass. Lot of hills out there.
It was a very mild event and we are going back to take the ride to the top. I was on the 4-4-0 at Wilmington & Western on her first run after major refit way back when. With no trailing truck she was losing her footing while backing down to the station and one driver would drop inside the rail. We were so delayed we got school buses to take the passengers to the station while we got the train home.
Having spent a year and a half working on her I volunteered to get under the firebox between the rails, place the wood for the jack and lift the driver up to the rail. All this after hanging the blue flag in the engineer's nose. What a long day after doing this more than once and do you know how hot is when lying under a coal fire!!!! I spent 6 weekends with the spraygun just before that run. Such were the times.
Hey come on out. Midnight ride threw the bad lands. 50 mph wind with heavy snow fall. -30 degrees F. Trains breaks down and or in two. Walk the 2 miles of train holding on to each car accpount zero visability and the wind not to mention waist deep snow with no thought of what ground is like under it.
OH ya I still love the railroad—–5 years left- hurry up. These old bones can't take a lot more of this shit.
Well bettter go ride the bike this afternoon. Not much time left till that type weather sets in.
