Not sure if Angel is still working out kinks, but is navigation through the site (mostly forum navigation) extremely slow?
Did you take a couple of days and read the instructions??
Pooch…not sure if you mean the loading speed of the board or the process of navigating from one feature to another. I don't find this program to be any speed demon, but not really having a problem with it. If anybody else is, I haven't been notified.
Now, if you need help with board features, you can check out the Instruction messages. Forgive Graham…it's been a lot of years since he had to read a technical reference document. Since I had no specific DOCS for the Simple:Press program and had to learn it all the hard way, I wrote the Instruction messages. They are NOT designed to be read at a single sitting. There are TITLES and BOLD words pointing to applications. Having trouble with an Avatar?…find that title and read exactly what to do. Same with posting or finding new messages or just about anything. It's a process of adding one set of facts on top of others until it all becomes automatic. It's based on HOW humans learn. The messages start with general basics, becoming more compete as you progress.
You might find more speed moving around the boards if you use the NAVIGATION CHAIN instead of the Back Button. Read about that in the Instructions. It's emphasized in many of the messages. Still having problems, e-mail (same old address) or PM me here…or ask for user input and help on the board. There actually ARE people here who will offer constructive advice.
My speed seems to be OK. One thing I missed, though, was how to post gallery photos. Angel, I only have a couple that might be considered good enough to post, but it looks like you do a lot of work to get pics on board, so maybe it's not something users can do on their own. I'm not sure if you need an actual jpg or a url of an image. Again, if you explained this already I apologize for missing it!

I really like the new site….well done!!
Tracie with this new program, it's NOTHING at all to posting the Gallery pics. 30 seconds…tops. Webbie hasn't decided to open the Galleries to self-additions. He's such a control freak (like…I'm also pretty bad about that ). If you send me your pictures in e-mail I'll post them immediately. They can be .jpg or found posted at a URL (copyable) where I can get them. The program automatically sizes them so there's no restriction there.
Sweetie, I'm here to give people a playground for information and social interactive fun. I am NOT here to judge your artistic endeavors. Anything in which you take pride and pleasure is welcome in the Galleries. This is a family of artisans. Share your work.
Glad you like the New Site. I'm always glad to explain its use…that's what an Admin does.

I may not have been descriptive enough in my original post but I can assure you, Graham, that as an engineer, specifically one that works for a software company that develops web content management software, I have a good hunch when something does not seem right with site performance.
I have an i7 notebook and have noticed the startup of the forum is really slow. After a few minutes checking the slowness is really present when using IE8. When using Chrome or FF, the startup if very fast.
OK…I keep a copy of Firefox on the desktop and occasionally revert to using it. I prefer the features in IE7 (tried 8…didn't like it…plunks too many add-ons when you're not watching ). However, you guys are right. The Board loads and runs flawlessly FAST on Firefox and drags it's ass on IE loading speeds sometimes (inconsistently). I have to conclude that the problems are not with the program, but with the Browser. It's crappy IE (should get a hint when the little "down" arrow only works with Firefox and not in IE).
I'm going to send the info to Webbie…have him read all the messages in this thread (which he usually does daily anyway) as well as the PM sent by Pooch, to get his ideas. I know what's going to happen. He's gonna LAUGH at me. He HATES IE…uses Linux to bypass all manner of MS stuff…and has been telling me for YEARS to switch to using Firefox. That's all fine, but people DO use it and we need to make the WordPress program work with it as well as it does with FF.
To be honest, I noticed an instant slowdown when I switched from IE6 to IE7 when 6 stopped working with some things (IE8 was even worse). It got so bad at one point that I had to wipe out all the custom settings and start over…despite zapping as many add-ons as possible. I actually got a faster speed setting on my Cable (which only helps with Internet access, but not within a program). I notice that there are several places online that recommend FF for their sites. The Bank I use with an "AT HOME" banking function does that, but it took a lot of frustration on my end with failed deposit transactions before I BELIEVED it and switched to using FF there. No more problems.
Meantime…assuming we can FIX IE browsing, those of you who have Firefox will find a better speed using it here. Much as I hate saying that, we need to be realistic and understand that ALL computer programs are not equal. (Isn't this the reason many of us won't switch to an upgrade until it's been out for 6 months or a year?…esp MS stuff).
Yep – For my two cents, I use Google Chrome and that must be why I am not seeing the slowdown, as well. For the most part, I really like Chrome, though there are times when pages don't load for whatever reason and it gives you a "kill" or "wait" option. I haven't tried FireFox but maybe it's time to give it a go.
Tracie, I've tried them all, I went from IE to AOLs' version of IE to Crome & since several of my computer nerd friends were swearing that FF was the best I gave it a try.
IE 8 is the worst of the lot, AOLs' version is much better, Crome better yet but can be quirky at times, I ran into the same problems as you. When I tried FF I said wow this what these type of programs should be like. Is it perfect, No but it comes closer than any other of these programs have.
I made the move to IE8 as IE6 was bombing too much. IE8 is slower but was at least not burping and throwing Other Half out and she hates moving to new browser. I tried Chrome and did not like the manual maintenance. It was too interested in keeping track of what it was doing so when you opened a new tab the screen was cluttered with every search an site visited. Just give me a plain screen when I open a tab. Have FF and Safari. Safari since it came with iTunes for the iPhone. And the new SF is slower in IE8 but since there is little activity slow is relative. I am finding that I don't care so much about browser speed with multiple tabs going. While waiting for a site to respond I jump a tab and that site has come up. Couple of tabs more and the speed of an individual site is less of an issue.
I have IE8 set to zap all cookies, files, cache and so on whenever I exit. Open a tab and it starts with a blank screen, not all the trash from other sessions like Chrome.
Sure is different from the green screen and 300 baud modem days. Even my iPhone is faster and is on my home wireless connection. If I can just get the PC to get me a refill.
Webbie did a program upgrade and hopefully it will solve (or help) with the access speed problem in IE. I'm trying it tonight for the first time and it seems to be a BIG improvement. Firefox was always a bit faster. I downloaded a copy of Chrome and it's a bit ditzy for my taste. Browsers are too much about what we get used to. Once a program becomes automatic, it's tough to change…unless it's too damn slow.
Please let me know here, if any of you find an improvement. Also, the Forum pages may show a few minor cosmetic changes…nothing that affects present navigation.
P.S. I bet nobody noticed that the NEW version of WP activated that little "down" arrow function that was previously inactive in IE. It works and it's a handy little gadget for navigation. Try it. Find it on the extreme left end of the "navigation chain" line at the top of a page. Not the only thing it fixed, along with the speed (or lack of it) in IE.
Charlie, there already IS a way to find NEW posts. More than 1 actually. There are FLAGS. Any place you see a redflag it signals a NEW, unread post (How is this different from the old forum which had the title of NEW posts all in red?). 1.) This begins in the 2nd forum line…next to that Down arrow which tells how many unread posts are in that Forum. When you access the Forum (eg. Discussion or Glass) and see the list of topics…those with NEW posts will have moved to the top of the list and will have a little RED flag in front of the Topic name.
2.) Alternately, you can Subscribe to Topics either in the PROFILE section of the User function or at the bottom of the topic…which will activate sending you e-mail when there are new posts in any of those.
3.) OR…you can choose to SUBSCRIBE and/or WATCH tropics of interest and they will be listed, when new posts occur, in the 3 RED BOXES in the first line of the forum (right side, where you find the PM box etc). The Boxes are Pink but turn RED when they accept a new topic (or PM) and there's a NUMBER in them telling you HOW MANY new topics are in there. Click on them and read.
Choose whatever method is most convenient for you. I suggest that you browse the second to last message in the Instructions named…
Finding NEW Messages..FLAGS and NAVIGATION NOTES…or the one about new user Navigation. That 8-part message has a LOT of info designed for scanning and finding what answers usage questions. It's OBVIOUSLY not designed to be read and remembered in one reading, but to gradually build, one set of facts at a time. As you can see, I am VERY fond of BOLD type for emphasis and the most pertinent parts of those messages are loaded with BOLD words, designed as signposts for navigation through the facts.
MOUSE OVER any symbol to see its function.
P.S. There's no need to scan all the way through a topic to read the last one posted. Merely click on the name of the most recent poster…which takes you straight to that message.
yes, i know how to spot them. yes, i can scan down.
many other bboard software packages give you a button/link that says: display a page with only new unseen items, or bring me to that spot without having me scan around to find that.
for that matter, your previous bboard software had the capability to only show entries submitted after the previous time i logged in, or all the entries added in the last 2 weeks.
