Hello – I'm just starting on a piece for a friend's daughter's wedding. They wanted something to hang behind a basement bar area with the panel being backlit. Size if about 24" x 36".
I have Glasseye and have plotted out a design. I was struggling with the NEBRASKA lettering since those letters are very blocky compared to the HUSKERS branded logo below it. Due to the size, I wanted to do the whole thing in copper foil to try to keep the weight down, but I'm a little concerned about the straight lines maybe not ending up so straight on the NEBRASKA lettering if I do foil. I think if my foiled letters are off just a tiny bit, it'll be pretty noticeable. I was thinking of doing this block letter section in lead to end up with better lines, but all other pieces in copper foil. I couldn't locate much info on the internet but it does sound like it's done sometimes, and just wanted to know if anyone had any pointers/suggestions. I don't particularly like the way the NEBRASKA letters are set up but couldn't really think of another way to do that part.
Glasseye draft is here…the little red and gold squares on the border will be jewels.
Can you cut a straight line? Can you foil reasonably evenly?
If you answered yes to the above, go ahead – you have no problems. Slight variations will not be noticeable by anyone but you. Your friends will love it.
If you answered no to the questions, perhaps it's a little early in your career to be taking on such a project. But completing this project will be a confidence builder.
Go ahead! Give it a go! My guess is that it will turn out much better than you think.
By the way, if the answers to the questions are no, doing it in lead will probably also go slightly askew, and will be more noticeable.
……………. there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worthwhile doing as simply messing about in boats.
Thanks, Graham! I'm going to give it a go with all foil. We'll see what happens. If I don't think the finished product is up to par, I guess there's always the ol' Target gift card as a backup.
perhaps using the same fonts would get you better spacing? i don't particularly like the block extra verticals.
you can mix lead and foil. i'd use a very thin lead though, which mean having good cutting skills.
you can also mix lead, foil, and fused. you (or someone with a kiln) might want to fuse the nebraska on a clear background, and then just add that as a single piece.
Thanks much. I couldn't get the pic to load but will try it later. It might be my browser. I want to see those doors.
With regard to the lettering, when you say "extra verticles", are you referring to the spacing in between? I've since redone the "A's" to make the fatter and blocker like the others, but I wasn't using a font – just drawing them out in Glasseye and trying to match some logos I looked up. If you're thinking I might be better just butting the letters up against each other, that's an idea and I'm going to see what that looks like.
I might be completely missing an easier font method in Glasseye that I don't even know about! I have the next step up from Standard (I think it's Professional).
yes, the verticals around the As and Es is too noticable. i don't know how GE works; i've never used or seen it. i don't know what you used for the font for the Huskers, so i ASSumed that there was some way to do text in different fonts. if not, try using Word and looking at the different fonts in there, then maybe import the text somehow?
Links worked today, and that door is gorgeous. I love the skylights, too. Thanks for posting these. I can see the fused portion of the pantry door – it really shows up nicely. I've never fused anything but the guy at the shop I visit keeps trying to get me into a class. Someday!
